Separating from your partner on Facebook could be the best way to have a successful marriage, one relationship expert has claimed.
A New York-based therapist has suggested couples that delete each other from their social media friends list will stay together longer.
Relationship expert Ian Kerner has said technology is causing miscommunication and arguments as couples lack face-to-face time.
“There’s something about being in a relationship where you want some unknowingness and some unpredictability,” Kerner said in an interview with Public Radio International.
“I realized for a little while with my own wife that I didn’t really want her to be my friend on Facebook,” he said.
"I didn’t want all of that extra information. If anything I wanted less information, I wanted more mystery and more unpredictability."
Statistics from the Pew Research Centre suggest that 25 per cent of mobile phone owners in a marriage or relationship feel that the device causes distractions. A further eight percent said they have had arguments over the amount of time a partner was online.
"Put the devices down. Studies have shown that even if there’s a device nearby, it can change the texture of a conversation,” said Kerner.
